You Don’t Have to Be a Model to Look Like One!!!

  • by

It’s my favorite time of year – New York Fashion Week.  This is like Christmas for a makeup artist, and I can still remember what it felt like to work backstage at my very first runway show.  Although there were so many amazing things about working behind the scenes of these huge productions, I’ll admit that it was sometimes a little tiring to be the “help.”  No one looks at the makeup artist and says, “Can I take your picture?!!”  Instead, they want pictures of the models and the clothes – which, I totally understand.

My next stop after these meetings was always McDonalds. ALWAYS.

One day, I was dead tired after an early morning show and searching for the nearest McDonalds so I could get some DIET COKE!  I was sweaty, exhausted, and most of my makeup was probably gone.  No one was going to mistake me for a model!!!  Then, I realized that I didn’t need to look exactly like them to look like a model.  Instead, I could use the tricks and tips from backstage and create my own model look.

I realize that I’m not nearly as tall as today’s models, and I’ll probably never walk the cat walk.  In fact, I don’t really want to.  But I do want to look good.  So do most women.

Embrace Your Uniqueness

I’ve worked with models from across the globe.  They all have different features and beauty that makes them unique on the runway.  Instead of trying to look like someone else, they show up to Fashion Week looking like themselves.  One time, I had the privilege to work at a runway show with GISELE!!  I couldn’t believe I was close enough to see the pores on her skin!!!! I remember looking at her and thinking she’s pretty because she has a beauty that is different than everyone else’s.  I wondered if maybe women should stop trying so hard to look like each other.

If you do not know what is unique about you, ask someone you trust.  Your friends are family will give you their honest opinion.  Maybe you have a great smile, good brows, or amazing eyelashes.  These are features that you should show off when you do your makeup.

Never Underestimate the Power of a Good Brow

At every runway show, brows played a big role in the final look for the model.  Most of the time, the models have full brows that are not groomed.  This actually makes it easier for a makeup artist to shape the brows during a hectic fashion show.  Usually, we would use brow gel to brush the brows up so they framed the model’s eyes.  This small thing made a huge difference.

If you don’t take the time to do your brows, it might be a good idea to start.  You can let your brows grow in and/or use a brow gel. Good brows add life to your face and draw attention to your eyes.

Perfect Your Skin

The models at Fashion Week don’t have perfect skin..  A lot of them have dry skin, breakouts, and other problems because their skin takes so much abuse during Fashion Week.  Fortunately, the right complexion products can perfect the skin and provide a great canvas to apply makeup.  When your skin looks great, everything looks better.

It doesn’t always take full coverage foundations to have good looking skin.  Sometimes, all you need is a BB cream or CC cream.  If you have textural problems, the illuminating BB cream by stila is my favorite.  If you want to minimize pigmentation and redness, look for a CC cream.

Finally, make sure to walk with confidence.  Hold your head up high and be proud of who you are.  This is one of the reasons models look so great on the runway – they know how to walk.  I wish all women had that same confidence everyday – regardless of where they were going.  We deserve to walk the runway of our own life and know that we are pretty!
