Why Natural Makeup is Still A Lot of Makeup

A lot of people ask me for natural makeup. I LOVE natural makeup! I also think it is important to understand that natural doesn’t mean no makeup. It is a style of makeup that requires specific products and tones.

Yesterday I was working with a beautiful girl who didn’t want to look overdone. She wanted to look like herself and she wanted to look natural. She also wanted to photograph well. I think we can all understand this desire. In order for me to accomplish her requests, I had to put A LOT of makeup on her. Did it look like she was a cake face? Did she look like a different person? NO!!! But makeup was required to enhance her features and correct the imperfections.

Foundation Looks Like Skin But Covers

When you want your makeup to look natural, you need a foundation with a skin like finish. At the same time, you also want it to cover. Too often, people assume they can’t have both so they don’t put any on. The good news is, you can! To find the right one, shop for products that meet the needs of your skin.

Use the Right Depth of Eyeshadow

Natural makeup still requires eyeshadow to add shape and dimension to the eyes. Choosing colors that are close to your skin tone are helpful if you are wanting a natural look. That’s why I love these palettes from stila. They are catered to your skintone. You can shop here for your specific skin tone:

  1. fair/light
  2. light/medium
  3. medium/tan
  4. tan/deep

Subtle Liner Instead of Something Dramatic

Another key component of natural makeup is eyeliner. I like to create a subtle line that enhances the lash line and is barely visible so it still looks natural. Obviously this requires makeup, and it makes a difference! It just doesn’t look as bold as a cat eye. You can even do this with eyeshadow. One of my favorite options is to use a brown liquid liner to create a tight line along the lashes.

Blush and Lip Color

Finally, blush and lip color are a must for natural makeup. If you do something to the eyes, you need to balance out the face by adding color to the cheeks and lips – even if it is with natural hues. My favorite natural blushes are creams. Gels are also nice options for a natural flush. The more shimmer you add to the cheeks, the less natural the look gets. Also, shimmer can cause you to loose shape to your face.

Finally, for your lips make sure to use something even if it is a tinted lip balm! You can also try this amazing color balm in dusty rose, which gives the lips hydration, shine, and smoothness!
