Photoshop – Perception Vs. Reality in the Makeup World

When I first started working for Stila, the company chose advertise their products with fashion caricatures rather than actual models.  This was a breath of fresh air and it allowed many normal women to connect with the brand.  For awhile, you would see “Stila girls” advertising new products like the sport line in the picture below.  This marketing approach was unique, different, and approachable.

Due to the popularity of photoshop and consumers requests, stila began to advertise with models.  The stila girls are still around, but they are less of the focal point. These fashion caricatures take a back seat to photoshopped models that display their latest and greatest products.

Why Photoshop?

In the makeup world, why is there such a need to rely so heavily on photoshop?  I believe that it is because that’s what everyone does.  Cosmetics companies feel pressure to “keep up with the Jones.” If one company has an array of fabulous eyeliners, the next company will release a great set the next season.  It only makes sense that most of the makeup ads probably contain more photoshop than makeup.

Perception Vs. Reality

The problem with photoshop is that it can change our perception of a product.  The above picture is an ad for one of stila’s AMAZING primers.  I remember when it first came out and the model’s face was attached to the ad.  We received a few complaints about the photoshopping on the model’s face.  At the same time, I remember social media and blogging efforts that showed real people using the product.  You could see the results of the product without the photoshopping.  Perhaps the photoshopping was unnecessary.  However, when your ad is sitting next to Laura Mercier’s flawless face advertisement, it might be a little intimating to avoid a little post camera editing.

Do You Believe the Smart Makeup Marketing?

A lot of companies are marketing smarter to today’s consumers.  They understand that we see that picture of the model’s perfect skin and don’t believe that it’s a result of one product.  I’ve seen ads from Makeup Forever that say, “No Photoshop.”  Bare Minerals also uses real women instead of models.  These strategic marketing tactics seem to win big with consumers.  However, these ads often look better than the product looks on the everyday person, making me a little skeptical.

Smart Shopping

Although ads are engaging, eye catching, and hard to ignore, I think it is often best to ignore them.  Surely, it would be boring to shop for products in a beauty store that had no images.  However, I bet you would come home with what you needed instead of what you are hoping to obtain.  We all want to look like that model on the ad.  The question is, will that product provide what you need?  This takes a little experimenting.

  • Test it out on your skin.
  • Read the ingredients.
  • Determine if it’s easy to apply.
  • Look for product reviews online.
  • Ask yourself if it’s something you will wear.
  • Don’t trust something that sounds too good to be true.
