How to Improve Your Smile for the Camera

I take a lot of pictures of a lot of people – mainly for social media. I am NOT a photographer, but I have definitely learned a few things over the years. One thing that I’ve noticed is how important it is to have a natural looking smile. A great smile makes makeup look even better. If you are wearing any makeup, a good smile is the perfect cosmetic! Because family pictures are one the horizon, I thought it would be fun to share a few of my favorite tips for a better smile.

Don’t Try to Hard

This tip should really be for my son who says “cheese” and smiles as hard as he can. It’s cute for a few seconds, but I really want him to relax so I can see his true emotion. Over smiling is also a common reason for smaller eyes – a problem I have. To fix this, smile all the way. Then relax just a little bit. Also, if your eyes seem to disappear when you smile, try this eyeliner on the inner rims of your eyes.

Take a Breath

Sometimes you might need a breather in between shots. This helps if you get anxious when you are being photographed. It also allows the muscles in your face to calm. If you are feeling really stiff, try an exaggerated breath where you blow the air out. You can even shake your face a little while you are doing it. Just make sure your lipstick doesn’t come off in the process. HA! This is why I like to use lip stains or liquid lipsticks because they are less likely to move when you are taking pictures.

Some of the best pictures I capture are when people are laughing. I love these shots, because I see real emotion and less forced smiles. If you have an important picture coming up, take someone with you who makes you laugh. You can also try fake laughing in between shots. It will help calm you down and promote a better image.

Lip Color

Finally, make sure to wear some lip color so your lips/smile doesn’t get lost in the picture. If you are not a huge fan of lipstick, consider a tinted lip balm. If you don’t know what colors look good on you, test a few so you choose the right one. I’m loving this set from the anniversary sale. It’s a great deal and gives you a variety of colors to choose from. This way you can find the one that is best for you.
