Are You Wearing the Right Lipstick?

  • by

Happy National Lipstick Day!  Isn’t it wonderful that there is a day devoted solely to this popular cosmetic product?  I’ll admit to being a lipstick connoisseur.  I’ve held on to lipstick colors that I love and even created my own concoctions.  The right lip color is the icing on the cake to a great makeover.  My personal favorite lipstick is one that Stila made about 15 years ago called Pixie.  I’m not quite sure when it got discontinued, but I’ve held onto it for years because I believe it is one of those perfect colors.

Finding Your Perfect Shade

It can be a challenge to find your perfect shade – even with all the alternatives out there.  Why?  You want a lipstick that stays on, has the right texture, has the right undertones, isn’t too dark, isn’t too light, etc.  When you find it, it’s not surprising that you want to stick with the same shade for a LONG time.  The thing I wish every woman out there understood was that even though Stila’s “Pixie” might be my favorite, it doesn’t mean that it’s the only color I can wear or should wear.

Make Your Lips Stand Out

Lipstick should make your lips stand out.  This doesn’t mean you have to wear neon pink.  Instead, make sure you are wearing a shade that has some contrast from your skin tone.  If you want to wear a nude color, people still need to see your lips.  If you conceal them so they blend into your face, then the look is ineffective.  If you don’t wear lipstick, it might be good to choose a sheer color, giving you some life.

Avoid Dull Shades

In general, it is best to avoid dull shades of lipstick.  Even a nude with pink undertones often looks livelier on most people.  A lot of women hold on to lipsticks that look brown or purple.  These are usually great nude colors for women with dark skin.  If you have yellow based skin, you should try a color that will give your more life.

Try It On

When it comes to lipstick, the saying, “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” applies.  You need to try it on to see how it looks on your lips.  The pH of your lips can make a lip color oxidize.  What the lip color looks like in the tube, might look very different on your lips.  If you don’t want to invest a lot of money on lipstick and you want to try on your lipstick before you buy, try Ulta Brand lipstick.

Mix Two Colors

Sometimes it takes two shades of lipstick to create the perfect shade.  This is especially true if you have darker skin.  Whenever I did Emmanuelle’s makeup, we would use two lipsticks and sometimes a gloss overtop.  If you want to find your perfect shade and it is no longer available, you might need to recreate it.  This is worth it if you want your lips to look great!
