10 Makeup Rules to Live By

  • by

If I could go back in time 15 years ago, there are several things I wish I had known about makeup.  My knowledge would have helped me look a little prettier.  I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best, including my mentor, Sarah Lucero.  From my years of experience, I’ve come up with a few rules to live by.  I teach many of these as a makeup artist in AZ at my makeup classes.  They will help you look PRETTY – even if you’re just going to Target.

  1. If you look tired, apply some blush and lip color.  Most people think they need eye concealer.  While concealer helps, blush and lipstick provides more of a pick-me-up.
  2. Everyone should own a taupe matte eyeshadow.  This shadow is ideal for shaping the eyes.  I apply it lightly in the crease, and sometimes in place of eyeliner underneath the eyes to correct redness and enhance the eye shape.
  3. Instead of drawing a straight line with your eyeliner, try connecting the dots with your lashes.  This looks more natural and it makes the application easier.
  4. Try to avoid plucking too many hairs underneath your brows.  This removes the brow structure, making them look curved instead of arched.
  5. Always begin with minimal foundation.  You can add more if you need it.
  6. Try wetting your brush when you apply eyeshadow to your lids.  This simple trick makes your eyes pop and helps the eye shadow last longer.  It also creates more dimension and definition on the eyes.
  7. If your mascara gets on your eyelids, wait a minute before trying to remove the product.  Then, take a q-tip and dab it on the problem spots.  It will come right off.
  8. A flesh colored eyeliner is a great alternative to white for the inner rims of the eyes.  It brightens and makes the eyes look bigger.
  9. The word illuminating should not be confused with glitter.  Products that illuminate usually add life to your skin.
  10. There is not one perfect product, but a right one for you.
