Why the Cat Eye Isn’t for Everyone

If there’s one beauty trend I have a love-hate relationship with, it’s the cat eye.  Why?  I meet very few women over 40 who can pull off this look.  For that matter, I don’t even think it works well on a lot of women over 25.  Yet it seems to be everywhere.  Walk into a beauty store and you will see that perfect winged line.  Take a look at the makeup on the runway, you will see it too.  It CAN look amazing but what about those times when it just doesn’t??!!!

The Cat Eye and Aging Eyes

Applying a perfect cat eye on aging eyes is difficult.  Crow’s feet around the eyes makes it awkward to extend the eyeliner and wing it up.   However, applying a cat eye on a model under 20 is easy (like my model below from New York Fashion Week).  There’s a big difference between aging eyes and those of young models or celebrities in advertising or magazines.  They are also often photoshopped.  If you have aging signs around your eyes, it’s ok to say no to this beauty trend.  It might even help you look younger. rebecca-minkoff-fall-2010-backstage-beauty-590do020910-1265830859

There are countless guides to help people create the perfect cat eye.  However, everyone has a different eye shape.  This is why so many women struggle to make it look right.  If every women had eyes like Lauren Conrad, perfecting the cat eye would be easy.  Older women might assume that a cat eye will lift their eyes when the line could do the opposite.  It might put too much emphasis on the sagging corner of the eye and not enough on the middle. cat eye lauren conrad The Good and Bad of the Cat Eye

When a cat eye is done correctly, the line becomes part of the lashes and extends out from the lash line.  This creates a beautiful, sultry look.  I love how it makes round eyes look more almond and enhances the natural beauty of asian eyes.  When the cat eye is not applied properly, it’s easy to focus on the line rather than your eyes.  Remember, you want people to see YOU – not your makeup.  When it’s overpowering all that is seen is that odd-shaped wing on the outside of your eyes so it’s better to tone it down. It’s fun to be on trend.  At the same time, you want to make sure you are wearing the trend suited for you.  If a certain color is in style it doesn’t mean you should wear it if it washes out your face.  Instead, you should try to accessorize with the color, invest in some fun shoes, etc.  You can apply the same concept to make the cat eye work for you.  Here are some ideas.

  • Instead of defining the eyeliner at the corner, blend it out and up softly.
  • Shorten the line.  It only needs to extend a little past your lash line.
  • Straighten the line especially if the wing looks like it’s pointing to the sky.
  • Avoid copying someone else’s cat eye.  Create the best line for your eye.
  • Use the right tools.  I recommend Stila’s Stay All Day liquid eyeliner and Andrea’s EyeQ’s to remove any mess-ups.

Older women should not do a winged eyeliner. Looks ridiculous. Accentuates all that shouldn’t be.

Mrs. Slocombe on “Are you being served” had winged eye-liner and she was in her sixties. Ditto Joan Crawford when she was aged. How did it work for them?

The traditional cat eye makeup may not work, but there are so many cat eye makeup styles, I found an article that describes each of the styles in case anyone wants to experiment http://www.cateyesandcandy.com/cat-eye-makeup/
